Yesterday, I explored the concept of realism and how our personal lenses filter the world around us. In today’s Visit Other Beautiful Soul’s post, I would like to acknowledge a Beautiful Soul who has spent about twenty years already helping people find deep truth and timeless wisdom amidst the modern digital rush.
The Art of Noticing
Doing research for my own writing, I came across Maria Popova’s work on her site “The Marginalian” and we might have similar approaches to life and reflection. Maria dives deep into literature, science, and poetry, often pulling forward ancient and modern philosophies that help us understand our human nature.
She frequently writes about perception, attention, and how we choose to view our lives. In a world full of rapid-fire information, curation, and misinformation, her virtual home stands as a quiet sanctuary. She encourages her readers to slow down, look beneath the surface, and examine the filters through which they view reality.
Acknowledgement
Acknowledgement is important, even more important than you might think. I wrote an article about that a few years ago (read more) and I figured, I can’t talk about the importance of this and not keep walking the talk myself, right?!
Acknowledgement is not about approving, it’s about empowering and showing appreciation. In our virtual world, we also have various opportunities to do so. While we can exist on our own, we thrive better when connecting to others.
Finding the truth in a world dominated by selectiveness.
Maria’s work focuses beautifully on what it means to live an intentional life. She often touches upon the realization I wrote about this weekend: That what is true or meaningful for a person is filtered through their unique history and inner world.
Whether she is sharing a beautiful essay on Henri Bergson’s philosophy of time and memory, or exploring how our minds construct reality… Maria reminds us that true realism requires us to step away from the fast-paced commentary of the internet so we can create our own grounded, honest perspective.
It is beautiful to see another creator building a virtual space where people are encouraged to stop shrinking, look closer at their own filters, and start living more consciously.
If you feel like you are looking for a deeper, more mindful perspective on how to perceive our complex world, I highly recommend visiting her virtual home. I will definitely add her to my reading list and dive deeper into her work.
