I’ve been reflecting again on a phrase that has become a mantra in our modern world: “Growth happens outside your comfort zone”. It’s a powerful sentiment, designed to push us past our fears and into the unknown. But as I sit at my desk today, I find myself questioning the absolute truth of it. We have become so obsessed with the idea of ‘uncomfortable growth’ that we have started to view comfort as a weakness and safety as a stagnation.
As a fellow global neighbor, I observe the result of this mindset: a society of people who are constantly under pressure but never settled.
We are told that to be a ‘Human Doing’, we must always be challenged. But to be a Human Being, we need a safe space. We need the comfort zone not as a place to hide, but as a place to reset ourselves. It is the solid ground upon which we stand while we reach for the next branch.
Here is, in my opinion, a truth we often overlook: To truly grow, the human soul requires a sense of safety. You cannot ask a person to evolve while they are in ‘Survival Mode’. You cannot ask a mind to be creative when it is constantly scanning for threats.
When we dismiss the need for safety, we aren’t encouraging growth; we are encouraging trauma. We are asking people to build lives on shifting sands.
I believe we need to reclaim the value of feeling, and being, safe. Safety is the foundation that allows vulnerability to exist. Without vulnerability, there is no real transformation. If you are always uncomfortable, you are merely reacting. When you feel, and are, safe, you’ll have the strength to choose to tackle the next challenge, emotionally or physically.
So, let’s stop apologizing for our need for comfort. Let’s stop glorifying the constant pressure.
My hope for us today is that we recognize our ‘Internal Anchor’ is built in grounded, safe spaces we create for ourselves. Growth isn’t just about the courage to leave the threshold of our home, or to challenge ourselves mentally; it’s about the reassuring knowledge of feeling and being safe.
Let’s value the comfort zone as much as the unknown.
