A new year has begun and many of our global neighbors will make New Year’s resolutions, create vision boards, list goals, etc. Maybe, you do too. Ultimately, I think it is all about making promises. Are you going to keep them?
Promises, promises
While I don’t do New Year’s resolutions because I believe every day is a chance to do better, I also believe there is nothing wrong with participating in this global custom. No one should hold you back when you feel inspired and ready to grow. Whether it is to improve your health, financial situation, or any other area in your life.
Despite all the good intentions, however, research has shown over and over again that by February many of us will fail to carry on with all new plans. There are many causes for this; unrealistic goals, too many plans at once, following a new hype, disregarding one’s uniqueness, are a few examples.
Fortunately, there are also ways, methods, and strategies to succeed. Changing your habits, creating a supportive environment, surrounding yourself with like-minded people, journaling, and hiring a coach are among those. Re-Connect to, or deepen your Connections to Life, Others, Yourself is always a good idea.
Whatever and whenever you want to do better this year; ultimately, I think it is all about making promises.
For yourself. To yourself.
I also think nobody likes it when someone makes a promise and does not keep it. There are more than enough promises made in this world that aren’t kept. Which are truly harmful, painful and damaging. What if we rethink resolutions, strategies, and goals to be promises we make to ourselves… Would we be able to follow through?
Sometimes life does not give you any other option than to disappoint someone else. It happened to me too. That is hard enough on its own. The feeling you did let another down, nope, not fun at all. Worse, which happens to the best of us, disappointing yourself. Hence, this year I am going to be very careful about the promises I make. Not only to others, also the promises made to myself.
By December 31, 2026, I hope to be able to look back without being disappointed in myself and knowing that I have kept all my promises.
Wishing you, dear reader, global neighbors, a promising new year ; -)
Warm regards,
Patty Wolters
