Growing up, most of us get asked who your hero is. Maybe it was your grandfather, a teacher, a famous athlete, or an artist. Today’s choice for a new Soul Music post is about heroes. However, probably not how you expect it to be…
Heroes
As a child, I was a fan of various singers and bands. I remember vividly recording my favorite songs played on the radio, annoyed the DJ usually talked over the beginning and the end. Needless to say, DJs were definitely not my heroes. Although I did have posters of (good looking to me) male artists on the wall, I never idolized them.
Growing up, I quickly realized ((had to) that heroes are humans too and that you can be very fond of someone, or be amazed by their skills, but better not to place someone on the so-called pedestal. You better become your own hero ; -)
These days it can be dangerous to stand for something you strongly believe in. These two sentences in today’s Soul Music post describe what I think about that:
“If you’re not really sure what you’ve ever stood for
Are you part of a problem that is bigger than the one that you see?”
Impressed by Roger Federer and Valentino Rossi, loved to watch Oprah Winfrey and still a huge fan of Barbra Streisand, Aerosmith and Nightwish, I also have respect for people such as Mr. and Mrs. Obama. Carl Jung and Martin Luther King are also among the persons I would love to have dinner with, if they were still alive.
The older I get, the more I find myself drawn to people who are bringing meaning into the world, without the need for control. Connecting with an open mind, respectful, peaceful. Maybe, the music-heroes and cool kids as described in today’s Soul Music couldn’t find such people and therefore went to the bottle or other drastic measures…

All My Heroes - The Big Push
Lyrics
Leaving to the city, try to find out who I am
Well, nothing here is pretty, and I don’t know where to stand
A kingdom that’s so greedy, built upon a barren land
I don’t care much for money, honey
Ain’t it funny how you feel rejected, if you don’t stick to the plan?
When I was just a baby boy, I got dropped on my head
I grew to be a big strong man with half my logic dead
This world called you crazy, if your thoughts ain’t got no thread
I don’t care much for sanity, calamity
I’ll meet you in the moment, when you’re not sure where to tread
Maybe, I’ll wind up dead
Oh, my-my-my
All my heroes seem to die
The more I give, the morе I try
I end up quite confused
Oh, why-why-why
Thе cool kids all love suicide?
The king is gone and Jimmy died
And all my role models went to the bottle
What hope is there for me, if that’s what they do
Strangest game is living, and is every lesson learned? (Ooh-ooh)
I throw my hand into the fire and only end up burnt (Ooh-ooh)
Life’s quite unforgiving when you roll around in dirt (Ooh-ooh)
I’m not really one for social etiquette, no better yet
I’ll turn up to the party with a bloodstain on my shirt
And I’m so bored, the way things seem to me (Ooh-ooh)
Survival of the fittest force fed through your new TV (Ooh-ooh)
Neil took a step for man and Martin had a dream (Ooh-ooh)
If you’re not really sure what you’ve ever stood for
Are you part of a problem that is bigger than the one that you see?
It all looks the fucking same to me
Oh, my-my-my
All my heroes seem to die
The more I give, the more I try
I end up quite confused
Oh, why-why-why
The cool kids all love suicide?
The king is gone and Jimmy died
And all my role models went to the bottle
What hope is there for me, if that’s what they do
Papa don’t preach, he’s an honest man
(Papa don’t preach, he’s an honest man)
And the Devil makes work with idle hands
(The Devil makes work with idle hands)
Yeah, I heard him knocking at my front door
(I heard him knocking at my front door)
I said “Don’t you come ’round here no more”
(“Don’t you come ’round here no more”)
My papa don’t preach, he’s an honest man
(Papa don’t preach, he’s an honest man)
And the Devil makes work with idle hands
(The Devil makes work with idle hands)
Yeah, I heard him knocking at my front door
(I heard him knocking at my front door)
I said “Don’t you come ’round here no more”
Oh, fuck off!
Oh, my-my-my
All my heroes seem to die
The more I give, the more I try
I end up quite confused
Oh, why-why-why
The cool kids all love suicide?
The king is gone and Jimmy died
And all my role models-
Oh, my-my-my
All my heroes seem to die
The more I give, the more I try
I end up quite confused
Oh, why-why-why
The cool kids all love suicide?
The king is gone and Jimmy died
And all my role models went to the bottle
What hope is there for me, if that’s what they do
