The power of the "No."

The Breath

Last week, we spoke about the shift from a Human Doing to a Human Being Human. But to truly inhabit that space, we have to address the gatekeeper of our energy: Choice. We are often taught that connection means being “on”; available, responsive, and constantly linked to the expectations of others. We treat our attention like a public plaza rather than a safe home.

The Mantra

Here, on my virtual home, let’s practice a different rule:

Connection is a Choice, Not an Obligation.

Whether you’re seeking connection with a person, a quiet morning in nature, a complex task, or a difficult emotion; you are the one who decides when and what connections you create.

The Guide

At pattywolters.com, I am building a foundation that honors your right to choose your focus. This is a core principle of my Philosophy of Connection. Within this space, I operate from a position of “No-Fixing.” If I try to fix how you spend your time, I am overriding your internal compass.

Instead, I am here to help you uncover the connections that drain you and create new ones that fits your uniqueness. You have the authority to decide what deserves your resonance. True alignment isn’t about being “connected” to everything; it’s about being intentionally connected to the right things; be it a value, a need, or the silence of your own home.

The Connection Scan

I invite you into a 60-second scan of your current connections:

Identify the “Automatic”: Where is your attention currently “plugged in” out of habit? Is it a task, a worry, or a device? Notice the pull.
Create the Shift: Consciously choose one thing in your immediate surroundings: a plant, the texture of your desk, or the rhythm of your own breath. For 30 seconds, give it your full, intentional connection. Feel the difference between being pulled and choosing to connect.

At my desk, this coming week, I’m reflecting on the beauty of “disconnecting” to reconnect. I’ve realized that pulling back from the noise of the world isn’t an ending: it’s the preparation needed to truly connect with my own values again.

  1. Wow, Patty, wat mij betreft ben je een heel mooie weg ingeslagen nu. Of misschien ben ik er nu pas klaar voor 😉 Maar wat een eye-opener: ‘We are often taught that connection means being “on”; available, responsive, and constantly linked to… (whatever)’ Zo heb ik tot nu toe in ieder geval wél altijd tegen connectie aangekeken, met als gevolg vaak ook een gevoel van DIS-connectie als ik OFF was; als ik de natuur, de rust, de connectie met mezelf op zocht. En nu ineens valt het puzzelstukje. Mijn dank is eeuwig 🙏 😉 Ik ben meer ‘connected’ dan ik dacht…
    Veel van je wijsheid hier lees ik overigens ook (graag) in de I Ching. Daar sijpelt ook heel veel door van wat jij hier schrijft: je terugtrekken van het lawaai van de wereld is geen einde, maar nodig om weer echt in contact met je eigen kernwaarden te komen. Een proces wat voor mij vooral de afgelopen ruim twee jaar, op onze huidige plek, in gang is gezet, besef ik me steeds meer.
    Ik mediteer sinds kort ook weer (aan de hand van het Presence Process), en dat gevoel heb je mooi omschreven: je (aandacht) wordt niet meer weggetrokken naar wat dan ook, maar je kiest voor de connectie met je adem, je zelf.

    Enne… your connection guide (als titel) resoneert met mij stukken beter dan master (life) coach. Maar dat is heel persoonlijk, natuurlijk…

    1. Dankjewel Anuk! Fijn dat het je aanspreekt en je je eigen antwoorden er door kan vinden.
      Heb hard gewerkt om die titel te mogen dragen ; -) Zoals ooit een mentor tegen me zei; “als het geen valse bescheidenheid is, dan mag je best zeggen dat je ergens goed in bent”. Fijne nieuwe week!
